Shaping Soul into Stone: A Sculptor’s Timeless Journey

Few artists can transform shapeless clay into emotion as powerfully as Andrey Sledkov. For over two decades, this master sculptor has carved a name for himself through monumental works, expressive busts, delicate reliefs, and miniature statues that stir the soul. From classical forms to contemporary themes, his hands bring life to matter—gracefully balancing technical mastery with spiritual depth.

Shaping Soul into Stone: A Sculptor’s Timeless Journey

Sledkov’s love for sculpture began in high school and was cemented through mentorship and hands-on experience. Whether working with clay, bronze, plaster, or stone, he embraces each medium’s personality, driven by what he calls “the diversity of thought expressed through volume.” His preference for clay reflects the immediacy and intimacy of touch—where each fingertip imprint becomes part of the story.

Working in a refined classical style, Andrey finds inspiration in the beauty of the human form and artists like Auguste Rodin, while also learning from contemporary talents like Leroy Transfield. His creative process is a disciplined dance between commissioned work and artistic freedom, often sculpting on monumental scales for public institutions, museums, and historic restorations across Russia and Europe.

One of his most ambitious projects was the simultaneous execution of over 20 large-scale pieces—including 3.5-meter statues and detailed bas-reliefs—for Moscow’s Exhibition and Trade Center (VDNKh), alongside commissions for a zoo, Victory Day monuments, and architectural sculptures. With a team of 20 sculptors under his supervision, Sledkov orchestrated a masterful balance of logistics, leadership, and artistic excellence.

While his works may not aim to provoke controversy, they make a lasting impression through their timeless simplicity and reverence for form. For Andrey Sledkov, sculpture is not only about the physical—it’s about leaving behind something future generations will feel, not just see.

Advice to Emerging Artists:
“Master self-discipline, then break free. Copy the world while learning. Create your own once you’re ready. Don’t wait for inspiration—start moving, and inspiration will catch up.”
