One of Californiaโs Most Famous Aquariums Will Be Free to Visit
Good news for Monterey County residents. This September, they will have a chance to visit Monterey Bay Aquarium, one of the most famous and popular aquariums in California, completely free. The special program for local residents will run from September 8 through September 20, 2026.
The offer is especially attractive for families because regular admission to Monterey Bay Aquarium is not cheap. A standard adult ticket currently costs $65, while admission for visitors ages 5 to 17 costs $50. Children under 5 are admitted free. That means a regular aquarium visit for a family can easily cost more than $200.
From September 8 through September 20, Monterey County residents will be able to avoid those costs. However, you cannot simply arrive at the aquarium and ask for a free ticket at the entrance. The number of free tickets available each day is limited, so tickets must be reserved online in advance.
Up to six free tickets can be reserved in a single booking. A ticket must be reserved for every visitor, including young children. Visitors age 18 and older will need to show a photo ID and proof of Monterey County residency at the entrance.
There is one more important detail. Guests with these special free tickets will be able to enter the aquarium starting at 12 PM on the day of their reservation. Anyone planning a visit should keep this entry time in mind.
Monterey Bay Aquarium is located directly on the Pacific Ocean in Montereyโs historic Cannery Row district. The aquarium opened in 1984 and has since become one of the most recognizable attractions on Californiaโs Central Coast.
One of the things that makes it special is the opportunity to experience the remarkable underwater world of the California coast. Its enormous exhibits feature marine animals from Monterey Bay and the Pacific Ocean, and some displays can make visitors feel as if they have stepped underwater for a few minutes.
The famous sea otters are among the biggest attractions. Visitors can watch them swim, eat and play. Just as impressive is the enormous Open Sea exhibit, where schools of fish and other open ocean animals move past a massive panoramic viewing window.
Another signature attraction at Monterey Bay Aquarium is its kelp forest. Monterey Bay is famous for its underwater forests of giant kelp, and the aquarium has created one of its most impressive exhibits to give visitors an up close look at this extraordinary ecosystem.
There is plenty for children to explore as well. In addition to watching marine animals, the aquarium offers interactive spaces and programs that help young visitors understand how ocean life works and why marine ecosystems need protection.
The free admission days for Monterey County residents are part of the aquariumโs efforts to support its local community. Programs like this help make one of the regionโs biggest tourist attractions more accessible to the people who live nearby throughout the year.
There is one important reason not to wait until the last minute. Free tickets are limited and are distributed through advance reservations. Once all available spots for a particular date are reserved, free admission for that day may no longer be available.
So if you live in Monterey County and have been wanting to visit Monterey Bay Aquarium or are planning a family outing, it is worth choosing your date in advance.
Free admission will be available from September 8 through September 20, 2026.
Tickets can be reserved and program details can be checked on the official Monterey Bay Aquarium website: https://www.montereybayaquarium.org/locals
If you have friends or relatives in Monterey County, share this information with them. For a family, free admission could mean saving a couple hundred dollars and enjoying a wonderful day on the California coast.
