Gateway International School has become one of Sacramentoโs most dynamic educational environments, a place where global minded academics meet deep community roots. Under the leadership of Principal Michael Maita, the school continues to expand its International Baccalaureate programs, strengthen cultural connections, and prepare students to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
In this exclusive interview for New Times Magazine, Michael Maita discussย with Publisher Sergey Ivannikov the mission behind Gateway International School, the importance of global citizenship, and the leadership philosophy that guides his work every day.

Principal Maita, what inspired you to pursue a career in education, and what ultimately led you to become Principal at Gateway International School?
Iโve always been drawn to working with young people, and from an early point in my career I knew I wanted to dedicate myself to a path that created tangible, positive change in the world. Education felt like a natural fit, it is a field where you can see the impact of your efforts every single day in the lives of students and families.
When I moved from San Francisco to Sacramento, I was immediately struck by the unique spirit of Gateway International School. There is a deep sense of history here, with founding staff members still serving the school and a community that truly knows and supports one another. That strong foundation of care and connection is what drew me to lead this school as principal.

Mr. Maita, Gateway International School puts a strong emphasis on international education. What makes GIS unique compared to other schools in the Sacramento region?
Gateway International School is unique because it blends the International Baccalaureate mission with the heart of a deeply rooted local community. Our IB program challenges students to think critically, embrace global perspectives, and become compassionate, lifelong learners.
At the same time, our families form strong, lasting connections with each other and with the school. We are also a welcoming place for recent immigrant families, providing support as they acclimate to life in the United States while helping students develop English language skills and thrive academically. Together, these strengths prepare our students not only for success in school, but also to become empathetic leaders in a global society.
Michael, what role do you believe schools should play in preparing students not just academically, but as global citizens?
Schools have a responsibility to prepare students not only with strong academic skills, but also with the mindsets and dispositions they need to thrive as global citizens. Knowledge alone is not enough, our students must also learn empathy, resilience, critical thinking, and the ability to collaborate across differences.
At Gateway International School, this is central to our mission and the IB framework. We want our graduates to leave not just ready for college and career, but ready to contribute meaningfully to a more compassionate and interconnected world.

Mr. Maita, how do you balance the importance of academic achievement with social and emotional learning in your classrooms?
Academic achievement and social emotional learning are not separate priorities, they support each other. Students learn best when they feel safe, supported, and connected, so nurturing their social and emotional growth is foundational to academic success.
At GIS, we emphasize creating a caring environment where students build confidence, develop healthy relationships, and learn how to navigate challenges. By integrating these supports into daily classroom life, we ensure that academic rigor is matched with the emotional tools students need to thrive.
Michael, what do you consider the biggest challenges facing educators and students today, and how is GIS addressing them?
One of the biggest challenges today is navigating the role of technology in both learning and daily life. While technology offers incredible opportunities, it can also become a distraction and a source of stress.
We recently implemented a ban on cell phone use during the school day to help students remain present, focused, and engaged. At the same time, we recognize technologyโs potential and approach it with care and deliberation. Our district is strategically piloting AI learning tools with staff to strengthen instruction through engaging learning experiences and targeted interventions tailored to each studentโs needs.
By pairing healthy boundaries with thoughtful innovation, we work to find a balance that supports both academic success and student well being.

Mr. Maita, you work closely with families and the broader community. How important is community involvement in a studentโs success?
I truly believe that it takes a village to raise a child. Students are most successful when school staff, parents, and students work together toward shared goals.
At GIS, we prioritize strong partnerships with families through regular communication, workshops, and community events. We also connect families with local resources to ensure they are supported both inside and outside the classroom. When schools and families collaborate, students feel surrounded by encouragement, and that support has a profound impact on their growth.
Michael, technology continues to reshape education. How is Gateway International School adapting to these changes, and what role do you see technology playing in the future of learning?
Technology is transforming education, and we are approaching it with balance and intention. Limiting cell phone use helps students stay focused, while our investment in AI tools enhances instruction and personalizes learning.
Over the past two years, we have equipped our staff to use AI responsibly and effectively, ensuring that technological integration is thoughtful and mission aligned. I envision a future where technology sparks creativity, fosters global collaboration, and helps students develop the confidence to approach complex problems.

Mr. Maita, what leadership values guide your work as Principal, and how do you foster those values in your staff and students?
My leadership is grounded in the belief that growth happens when we step outside our comfort zones with purpose. I try to model this by continually learning and encouraging others to view challenges as opportunities.
Integrity is also essential, leading with honesty, empathy, and respect for othersโ time and perspectives. Above all, relationships are at the heart of our work. When we listen first, act with intention, and invest in authentic connections, we create a school culture where everyone feels empowered to contribute and thrive.
Michael, can you share a success story that best reflects the mission and vision of Gateway International School?
One of the most powerful examples is our eighth grade community project, a capstone experience in the IB program. Students identify a community need, research it, and implement a project that creates real impact.
I have seen students lead sustainability initiatives, organize drives for families in need, and develop awareness campaigns on issues they care about deeply. Watching young people take ownership of their learning and realize they can make a difference reflects exactly what our mission is about, preparing thoughtful, compassionate, and engaged global citizens.

Mr. Maita, what advice would you give to parents who want to prepare their children for success in an ever changing world?
In a rapidly changing world, parents can best support their children by nurturing curiosity, resilience, and empathy. Encourage them to ask questions, try new things, and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.
Model compassion in your interactions and guide them toward meaningful engagement with the activities and causes they value.ย When children grow up adaptable, caring, and grounded in a sense of purpose, they are prepared not only to succeed personally, but to make a positive impact in their community and the world.
